The purpose of brakes is to reduce the speed or stop a vehicle as efficiently and safely as possible – that is clear to everyone. However, not everyone is aware of the major impact of the brake lining (brake pads) on braking. As they say – there are brake pads and there are brake pads.
Fitting unsuitable brake pads on a vehicle may lead to a number of problems. Some of the resulting characteristics may be very dangerous, yet the average driver may not notice anything at first.
HOW TO CHOOSE?A wide range of brake pads, often with very little information for the users besides the price, are available on the market. It is therefore quite difficult for most people to make an informed decision regarding the quality of brake pads that are not supplied by Škoda.

The braking effect is reduced during repeated braking when the temperature of the brake lining and the discs increases. The reduced braking effect is barely noticeable for the driver when high quality brake pads are used. However, deterioration of the braking effect in the case of poor quality brake pads may be so severe that the driver feels as if their car were not braking at all.
Cracks or crumbling and splitting indicate the onset of destruction…The friction material in high quality brake pads remains intact throughout their service life. In the case of brake pads of inferior quality, cracks may appear, the friction material may crumble, its edges may break off, etc. These initial imperfections may eventually lead to destruction of the friction material and a total loss of the braking capacity.

Braking segments heat up considerably during repeated rapid braking and the braking effect gradually weakens. High quality parts retain their high efficiency even at extreme temperatures, while brake pads of exceptionally poor quality may even self-ignite.
The testing program focused on braking characteristics and comfort parameters, such as creaking, drumming, vibrations of the steering wheel or the entire vehicle and other negative effects.

The results of Škoda genuine brake pads and other than Škoda genuine brake pads with regard to the braking distance and comfort were relatively comparable. However, once the brake pads were removed from the vehicles, the following characteristics influencing the service life of brake pads and the safety of the vehicle operation were detected in brake pads other than Škoda genuine brake pads.

Škoda genuine brake pads were the only ones to demonstrate the ability to meet the required criteria for braking.Brake pads other than Škoda genuine brake pads led to an excessively long braking distance and even self-ignited in three cases. Further faults, such as brake lining sticking to discs, edges or lining breaking off and crumbling or complete destruction of the friction material, were detected once the brake pads were removed from the vehicles.
